We had a problem with getting warranty repairs done in a timely
fashion while offshore. Companies don't seem to understand what
weather windows are. We knew one couple who had their watermaker
sent for repairs 3 times in 3 months. Another couple had their wind
generator sent in 3 times too. Guess things come in threes. :-)
For companies in the US and Canada, one avenue of recourse is the
Better Business Bureau.
You can even file a complaint online from an Internet cafe (say, in
Mexico). You have to file the complaint with the local BBB in the
area of the company. The main web site will have an index of local
BBB's web sites.
One thing I've realized. You really want a company with "no problems
reported within the last 3 years" as opposed to "all problems
resolved". Good companies should never have their customers
compelled to file with the BBB.
Also, buying equipment with a "Gold" Visa card has saved us quite a
bundle. It doubles the warranty period. You just get an estimate
approved, and the repairs done. And I don't think you have to go
back to the original manufacturer which is good if you're in a
different city.
