Hi Frank,
Coincidentally, I got the Nov/Dec "Good Old Boat" yesterday which has a
detailed article on this very subject written by Larry Pardey. Might be
worth a look to help you make up your mind. This seems to be THE mod most
owners are making prior to offshore work with roller furlers. The only
problem I can see with going for a wire luff sail would be that of
chafe--once you go thru the cloth at the luff its all over and if the sail
spends most of its life bagged there will likely be chafe from creases
before you get much use of the sail.
My $.02
