Since the Contessa is renowned for its quality, it may be that a large, strong backing plate will do absent a tie rod. An addition to the backing plate might be glassing in one or more beams under the cleats -- perhaps just forward and aft of the cleats, tied together with fore/aft stringers and cleats between the beams. I had a similar sampson-post system on an old wood boat, and it was just as strong as could be. (When I finally cut her up, the post was one of the most difficult pieces to get out.) Should you do something like this, I'd suggest you carry the glass well down the sides of your hull, and I'd certainly suggest you use a liberal glass schedule.

Just my $.02 worth.

Yes, yes, absolutely! The mooring cleats must be heavily backed up. I think
that here on Lake Ontario it is not a problem to have second rate mooring
gear but that of course is not the case where I plan to go. Thus, I plan to
use dual 10" S/S cleats (on my 26' contessa) with a large marine plywood
backing plate inside the forepeak. I'm not decided whether I will use an
inside attachment to further attach this point to the hull via a wire, since
it would have to go right through the water tank. Yeah, I know I could move
it but the deck is so solid anyway that with a large enough backing plate
this may not be necessary. Also, it is my intention to use an inner forstay
only for smaller sails or in emergencies. In any case, I may add an
internal bulkhead to achieve a similiar effect.

> Articles I've read almost always suggest that the cleats/attachment device
should not only be backed up well but also should involve a connection from
the attachment's underside to either a bulkhead or the keel, etc. These
articles also raise the issue of running backstays to counteract the
pressure a baby-stay puts on the mast.
