Yes, yes, absolutely! The mooring cleats must be heavily backed up. I think
that here on Lake Ontario it is not a problem to have second rate mooring
gear but that of course is not the case where I plan to go. Thus, I plan to
use dual 10" S/S cleats (on my 26' contessa) with a large marine plywood
backing plate inside the forepeak. I'm not decided whether I will use an
inside attachment to further attach this point to the hull via a wire, since
it would have to go right through the water tank. Yeah, I know I could move
it but the deck is so solid anyway that with a large enough backing plate
this may not be necessary. Also, it is my intention to use an inner forstay
only for smaller sails or in emergencies. In any case, I may add an
internal bulkhead to achieve a similiar effect.
