Subject: RE: [worldcruising] Inner forestay

Hi Frank,
I'll second what Jack is saying here - we're going through the same exercise
setting up a Solent Stay on my boat (36' Fractional sloop). I spoke to the
designer, and he told me it's a good mod for an offshore boat, but the
attachment point on deck had to be reinforced with a tie rod attached to a
chain plate glassed into the keel just behind the stem. It was a relatively
easy modification for us - the forepeak is just a sail storage area (ie no
bunks) so getting a shipwright to glass in the chainplate was fairly
straightforward (but not cheap. Is anything? :-) ).
Personally, I wouldn't trust an attachment point on deck just backed up with
backing plates under the deck. Remember, that if you do need to deploy your
storm sails, it's not going to be in balmy spring breeses; the stresses on
the deck and mast fittings will be very high. It'd be no time to find out
that the fitting wasn't strong enough as the backing plates pull through the
deck leaving a nice hole for the sea to get in.
Also, depending on where you attach the inner forestay to your mast, you may
need to consider checkstays or runners; this will depend one your particular
mast design. Probably a good time to have a chat to your local rigger.
Andrew's mentioned Brion Tosses web site, www.briontoss.com, there are a
couple of very good threads discussing this very topic on his bulliten
board, Spartalk. Have a look and see what they're saying. But remember, the
whole exercise isn't just about adding a piece of wire to fly a storm sail
off, you need to integrate the whole system so it'll work when it has to.
Good luck, and let us know how you get on,
Cheers
Geoff.
