RE: [worldcruising] Inner forestay

Hello Frank,

This question has been debated in many sites I have visited and the usual
conclusion is that in strong wind/storm conditions a free flying sail is too
difficult to manage and almost impossible to get a reasonably straight luff.

I installed a "Solent Stay" which is a removeable forestay attached on deck
approx 12 inches back and parallel to the roller furler headstay. This was
easier than a standard cutter configuration as:

No running backstays to worry about
Ability to set a drifter/reacher
Abiliity to set twin running sails (roller furling sail and drifter side by
side)
Much easier to install deck attachment. I used s/s plate welded to a
backing plate bolted onto the stem fitting. Very strong as it should be!
No rod, chainplate etc through the front cabin thereby messing up the
accomadation.

Brion Toss in his web site has some info on this

Regards
Andrew
