Subject: [worldcruising] Inner forestay

Hi All,
I recently joined your list. I have a Contessa 26 which I am getting ready
for an extended voyage starting from Toronto.
The boat currently has an Ultra-Furl foresail furler which, (never had one
on previous boats), is a wonderful convenience though I don't trust it 100%
due to potential for jamming or breaking. Thus, though I'd like to keep it,
I'd also like to add an inner forestay arrangement. It seem that the easiest
way to do this would be to make an attachment point just aft of the anchor
locker (about 3 feet from the bow). This might consist of heavy cleats which
apart serving as hard points for anchoring would also serve as an attachment
point for a removeable inner forestay. I am wondering though, if I actually
need to add a forestay or could I get by with hoisting a wire-luff stormsail
or small jib when necessary. This would make for less clutter on an already
small foredeck/mast area. Has anyone used a sail of this type? Is this
viable or do I really need a *real* forestay.
I expect that I would only use this inner sail in storm or heavy wind
conditions, or if something goes wrong with the 'real' foresail.
Thanks for your thoughts
