If you want to update charts from the Coast Guard Weekly Notices it would
be hard to do if
covered in plastic. Of course I don't know very many people who actually do
that. I tried, but
it became a full time job.
On our trip from Long Beach, CA to Washington D.C. via the Panama Canal we
left with enough
small scale (or is that large scale? Ones that cover large areas) to get to
Panama. Then we took
the Mexico Chart Kit and Charlie's Charts (a Mexico cruising guide. For
point further South we then
bought charts for specific ports, such a Puntarenas, C.R. etc. If we found
we wanted to stop somewhere
we didn't have adequate coverage for we copied sections of other cruisers
charts. We just copied them
at any store with a copy machine. Sometimes we just traced the relevant
points. Once through
the Panama Canal we were able to trade with boats going the other way. In
those trades we ended
up with all sorts of charts including some Russian ones. (this was from
1985 thru 1988). Only once did
we discover we were missing coverage of an area that extended 40 miles
while traveling
inside the barrier reefs of Belize.
