[worldcruising] Emergency Tiller

Subject: [worldcruising] Emergency Tiller

My Ohlson 38 has wheel steering, but lacks an emergency tiller. The top of
the rudder post is about one foot behind the wheel underneath a removable
helm seat, and about a foot-and-a-half below the top of the wheel. Jim
Howard in his "Handbook of Offshore Cruising" notes that many emergency
tillers are too short or unworkable in heavy weather. And, I have not found
any suggested designs for one. Any suggestions where I look?

By the way, thanks for the suggestions on the outhaul. I am going to see a
machinist today and will report back when the outhaul sheave is installed.
He's willing to make an emergency tiller, but wants a design.

Evert

p.s. I'll worry about emergency steering later--just 'another' project.
