Hi Larry,
I'd want to rig the runners before I encountered conditions that might cause
the backstay to part. But then, I'd want to reef before I needed to! [L]

7x19 galvanized won't rust, stows "small," and is easily cut and bent to
thimbles. Many older yachts still use it for standing rigging. Wire rope
clips are much faster to install, too. Can you imagine working a Nicopress
tool at the masthead? Of course, you could pre-install a thimble of the
appropriate size on each end of whatever you carry for a spare. Then you'd
only have to work one end where you cut it.
Crosby is a well-respected US (and Canadian) rigging hardware manufacturer.
And yes, these clamps are also called "bulldog clips" or "wire rope clips."
The reason I mention Crosby is because I suggest that you get good forged
clips rather than the cheap malleable (or forged) imported clips, which I
would not trust. These are not stainless like the ones which should be used
on stainless tiller rope. You should be able to get what you need at any
shoreside industrial rigging supply company, Grainger, or McMaster-Carr. If
not, email me privately.
I do not trust *any* Far-Eastern manufactured hardware, forged or not. A good
example is the beautifully-finished forged SS chain hooks available in the US
and the Caribbean. They break without warning at the throat, which failure
mode (catastrophic) is common with Far-East forgings. A North American or
European forging will give some warning prior to failure.
Kind regards,
John
