Let me suggest some more reading:

John Vigor's "The Seaworthy Offshore Sailboat," and his "Twenty Small
Sailboats to Take You Anywhere." Subscribe to "Good Old Boat"
(www.goodoldboat.com), Practical Sailor (www.practical-sailor.com).

Go to sailboat shows and look at every sailboat and ask lots of questions
and attend as many of the seminars/lectures as possible.

And for cruising accounts, look up the books by Hal Roth.
