I have a 1969 Irwin 31, CCA design, Keel/CB. because of the continueing
maintenance problems with the board, including but not limited to the ones
you mentioned. I glassed in the trunk and am very happy with the boat. Of
course I am not racing it. Undoubtedly I have lost some performance to
weather, which is the only time a CB is really used anyway. but not being
a racer, it is hardly noticable. Moreover, it is possible to deepen the
keel somewhat be adding glass to the bottom, and still maintain your shoal
draft.
I cruise the boat the the Bahamas frequently and I find that the 3' 4" draft
is perfect and it still sails just fine.
Good luck and good sailing.
