A few months ago I posted the cry for help below. This is just to thank
everyone who responded and let you know that the mechanic did resolve the
problem by machining 3-4 mm off the bearing, thus increasing the gap between
this and the hub of the prop. Quite why the problem should suddenly have
started in the first place is another question, although a friend has
suggested that some extra play may have developed somewhere - eg. the
gearbox - as he says, it would only have taken a 1 mm movement to have
created the problem.

My delay in providing this follow-up is due to the fact that I've been
keeping the boat in Amsterdam this year and I was only last week able to do
a proper test (14 hours motoring plus lots of manoeuvring in locks and
harbours!).
