Hello Bob,

I installed the Martec AutoStream stainless feathering prop. As I recall,
they wanted seven inches from the end of the shaft to the forward edge of the
rudder. Unfortunately, all that data is on the boat, which is in Trinidad, so
I can't lay hands on it till November. The critical measurement, though, is
from the trailing edge of the (feathered) blades to the leading edge of the
rudder when the latter is hard-over.

As you know, the leading edge of the W42/43 rudder is relieved in way of the
wheel in order to allow room to withdraw the shaft. My experience was that
Martec's 7" clearance is more than enough, but I'm sure you'll want to do
your own measuring. Martec has a sheet to set these measurements down on and
submit to them.

I did have to shorten the shaft and turn a smaller taper (1-3/8" S.A.E.) as
the original was 1-3/4" as opposed to the Westsail spec 1-1/4." By the way, I
found it interesting that a 1-3/8: S.A.E. taper has a N.C. thread! I also had
to cut 4" off the shaft log because that is oversize as well. My advice is to
have the wheel on hand for fit-up and cut the shaft as (if) needed.

And yes, I had room enough for 2 zincs ahead of the wheel. Now there's about
an inch, which is OK, because Martec has a zinc on the prop nut, ala MaxProp.
I tried hard to get the wheel on the middle of the aperture (the original was
too far aft) and did achieve that.

The engine was seriously over-wheeled with the original (21" x 18") and the
poor old Perkins (76HP@XXX.XXX The
original Crealock-spec'd fixed wheel for the 4-236 with a 2:1 gear is 20" x
14"

To sum up, I doubt you'll have the trouble I did in fitting the Martec,
assuming you have the standard Westie stern gear. All you should have to do
is (maybe) shorten the shaft enough to get it on and off, which can be done
with a hacksaw and 2 bottles of Carib. Cutting the new keyway, however, will
require much more beer, unless you have a machine shop nearby. [L]

I have only had a "trial run" with the Martec, but I can say that I'm pleased
thus far. Motoring at 6Kn now requires more RPM, but hopefully we won't do
that often. I don't miss the shaft brake or the sound of the stern gear
turning while sailing. And, Mr. Perkins can get up to 2500 at full ahead.
Stopping is very quick, and the stern doesn't walk to port near as much.

Let me know if you need more info.

Best,

John
