We trolled for Salmon in Alaska with our perkins 4-326 for many hours. This
type of trolling is 1 1/2 to 2 knots, thus not only was the engine running at
idle, but I kept going in and out of gear. There seemed to be no problems.
I made sure that the operating temp was up to 180 degrees before beginning
and kept it there. At the end I ran the engine at normal RPM for a peroid.
I would agree that one should not leave the one engine of a twin screw at
idle when running the other. Run just one engine. and alternate days etc.
There is certainly lots of heavy equiptment that runs at idle a good portion
of the time, and it seems to have no ill effect if the operating temp is up.
I wonder if there is a greater risk of carboning up the turbo charged engines
    with prolonged idle.
