Planning a trip from Hudson to Long island sound

        Next month I have trip planned from Lake Champlaign to Maine and
would like some tips on getting to Long island sound from the Hudson River
just above the George Washington bridge. I know I have to get a railroad
bridge to open in the Hudson(just above G.W. bridge) and start my crossing
there into the east river.
        My concerns are: 1.timing of bridge opening on Hudson
                                                2. heights of bridges I'm 27'
with my mast up
                                                3. traversing Hell's Gate
from east river toward the sound
                (east?)do I need to be careful of tidal times?
                                                4. Other hassles I haven't
mentioned here?
