As usual we are pretty much in agreement, the only thing here is that I am
not quite so conservative on the one big anchor issue. Sometimes I think the
huge anchors on small cruisers are a little extreme.
I am more of the mind that if one is good two is better. Big or small. In
any high wind situation I have always set at least two and when I faced a
hurricane we had three down. Looking back if we would have had more rode I
might have put a fourth down. Maybe I just find it hard to sit and wait
without doing something. What I like about many small anchors is there
flexibility.
Also I do think that two small anchors if set properly will hold more than
one. In fact, I feel that most anchor failure is due to improper technique
rather than too small an anchor. The trick with two anchors in a storm is to
set them so that the angle between anchor 1, the boat, and anchor 2 is
smaller than say 60 degrees. Small angle distributes the load better and can
tolerate more wind shift while larger angle gives less yaw.
