I just completed a trip on the ICW from Houston to New Orleans. We used the
SR161 connected to a laptop running Coastal Explorer. It worked flawlessly.
Coastal Explorer accepted both GPS and AIS data on the same port, and even
automatically configured itself to the 38400 baud speed when it detected AIS
data on the port.
This is the first time I have used AIS, and I am now a huge fan. There is a
tremendous amount of commercial traffic on this stretch of the ICW. Being
able to see the tows before they came around the bend was great, and knowing
their name allowed us to call them before they were even in sight.
Really good stuff!
