Janice,
This one of those questions like the one engine or two, what size anchor,
what type of rode, etc. I described my bilge pump setup one time on T&T and
a listee told me I had too many and too big. Had a friend once tell me I was
"over anchored" too. Guess the listee had never been in jeopardy of sinking
and the friend had never dragged anchor.
First, you need a "maintenance" bilge pump. According to your needs,
anything from 350 to 500 GPH will keep your bilge dry. Put it on a float
switch and you should have some kind of counter or other monitor so you
establish a normal, daily pump usage. I use a water witch electronic switch
for this purpose. Then get one (or more) big pumps for emergencies, mounted
an inch or so from the bottom of the bilge, with a float switch and an
ear-piercing alarm in the pilot house. Make it to where you can silence the
alarm while you figure out what's wrong and make it so that you can switch
off both both pumps. Think diesel in the bilge.
Here's a source for the Rule 3700:

David Pascoe has an excellent primer on bilge pumps here:
http://www.yachtsurvey.com/bilge_pumps.htm Per his suggestion, I have a
small, monitored maintenance bilge pump and 3 x Rule 3700's with float
switches and silenceable alarms.
I use normal rule float switches on the big guys because they never cycle
and wear out.
If you have some question about wiring it--them-- up, don't hesitate to
email me offline. I've done this recently.
