My Oberdorfer was below the water line but still had to be bled to remove
the air every time the strainer was cleaned. It had a bleed petcock valve
mounted on the pump.

The spec sheet that Elliott found states:.
"These centrifugal pumps are not self-priming. They
must be installed below the liquid level so that the liquid flows
to the pump by gravity (flooded suction)."
The impeller does not rub against the housing like a engine raw water pump
and is less likely to fail. In order for this pump to work it has to be
mounted below the water line. If there is place for air to enter it will
cause to pump to fail to pump. I would pay a lot of attention to the
section of plumbing between the thru-hull and the inlet to the pump. I have
replaced a similar pump only to find out that the strainer lid was letting
air enter the system. This is really critical with these pumps.
