I have used Mobil ONE Del Vac full synthetic oil (this is NOT the Mobil One that you find in a gas station or consumer stores) for 14 years in a Hinckley Down East boat that had a 540 HP MAN diesel engine in it. NO issues what so ever. That was from 1990 thru 2004. I have used this oil in a 440 hp Yanmar and now on a pair of 500 HP Yanmar's in a Grand Banks Eastbay 43.

We also use this oil in over 125 trucks and power units in the company that I work for. I also use this Mobil ONE Del Vac full synthetic oil in the transmissions of the Grand Banks. YES, the owners manuel?for the transmission approves this oil for the Transmissions.

Full Synthetic oil will allow an increase in your miles per gallon as its "slippery" nature allows the engine to run easier. An increase in oil change hours are also possible, but I still change the oil at suggested hour changes. Oil stays much "cleaner" then normal oil. If you are using your boat in an area where you have cold mornings your engine will start much easier as the oil is much thinner then normal oil when cold. At the other end of temperature, when hotter synthetic oil provides a much better lubrication to an engine.

The newer diesel engines run much hotter internal temps?then older diesel engines and the very low sulfur fuel that we now are using does not have the lubrication qualities that high sulfur fuel had. Pressures in new engines are higher then older engines. And of course the MFG's are pushing more and more HP out of the same size engines. All of these items are why MFG's have been suggesting the switch to FULL SYNTHETIC oils. Not only on boat engines but on over the road trucks also.
