Marin's good post on this topic leads me to the likely conclusion that just
MAYBE dripless and standard shaft packings heat differently when in the
trail shaft mode without the cooling water flow from the engine. So it pays
to know what your installation particulars and its behaviors are.
I have dripless packings and made sure the cooling water hoses from the
engines were connected, although it was listed as not required for trawler
speeds. I thought it would be good to have the flow over the otherwise
stagnant areas of the new stainless shafts (originals were bronze) to keep
fresh oxygen supplied to them and thus aid in preventing things like crevice
crack corrosion.
I have not made extended runs on one engine above trolling speeds, but my
guess is my dripless packings will not heat above luke warm no matter what
speed I run while trailing a shaft. I know that all day long at slower
speeds (800-1000 RPM on one engine) causes no heating. I'll do a faster
speed trial at about 1600 PM and report back.
