If you were happy with the operation of the autopilot before it
failed, you should investigate replacing just the pump - should be a
lot cheaper and easier than replacing the whole system. You may be
able to use a Raymarine or other make pump with your Simrad
electronics.
Whether it is a DIY job or not depends, as usual, on your
experience/comfort dealing with the hydraulic plumbing and electrical
issues. I've installed two Raymarine hydraulic pilots (on different
boats) with no problems.
I have a Raymarine S1 pilot on my 31ft boat - it works fine by itself,
steering by compass, but is unusable trying to follow GPS
instructions, either from PC program or from a Raymarine C-80 display,
but I may not have everything set up correctly.
