>As it turned out, the center drive had de bonded from the impeller, so
the vanes were not turning. I had a spare, replaced it, not it is
running fine. Now to my question: Is this a common occurrence? Are some
brands of impellers less prone to this failure? Is there something I can
do to prevent this from happening again.
I'm guessing you have an Onan MDJE 7.5kw generator. Impellers do go bad
with age. Also some makes are better than others. We use a Jabsco
impeller in our MDJE since that's what the raw water pump is. If Johnson
(pumps) makes an impeller for that application, their impellers are
supposed to be better than Jabsco's. I have read of longevity problems
with the "blue" impellers, whoever makes them. We've had our boat ten
years, changed the MDJE impeller once during that time. We use the boat
year round winds permitting and run the generator for about an hour each
day we're out if we aren't going to move the boat that day.
The only way to prevent an impeller failure is to change the impeller
before it fails. Different people have different service intervals that
they like to use. It will depend to some extent on how often the engine
or generator is run, but some people like to change impellers every two
years, some people change them every 500 or 1,000 hours, and so on.
