We have the same regulator, and for me, the magnetic screwdriver changing
things seems just too complicated. You can just do too many things, some of them
could be problems if not well understood. We had a professional set it up
on his bench, then I installed it. It works fine, except that it seems to get
to float too soon, it seems like it is timed instead of a demand situation. I
am sure it can be adjusted, but what we do is simply turn off the ignition
switch for a second after we notice the voltage has dropped, the diesel keeps
running just fine, turn the switch back on and the regulator is back to full
output. Usually we do this either no times or once during an 8 hour run. When
we get to a marina and plug in, the batteries only have to be replenished
from using the bow thruster while docking. FYI, we have all 6V wet cells and
seem to have to add water only 2X a year or so, maybe 3, and we are on the loop
and use the boat almost daily, so we are not over charging by doing this.
