T&T: AIS, ARPA and "up North"

This summer we will be a bit further north than our previous cruises (usually around the Broughton Islands), heading down from Ketchikan to Port Hardy.

I've been wanting to add some aids for target acquisition and plotting, which leads one towards ARPA and/or AIS.

An ARPA board is available for our radar set (Furuno FR8062). Currently the radar is not connected to any "outside" devices, but we have a rate compass for the autopilot which could be connected, as well as a dedicated GPS (currently only feeding VNS). Adding those inputs would enable other display modes beyond relative motion, and coupled with ARPA I think would provide a good basis for target management.

I like radar, because it's a reflection (hah) of the real world as it is, rather than where things are supposed to be. Of course, that has shortcomings in that you have to have the image tuned well for the given conditions, or it can't see anything (or real targets are obscured by the clutter).

ARPA seems like it would be quite helpful to quickly assess target risk based on CPA etc.

AIS also seems helpful here, though I see it as a cross reference with radar targets and as such would prefer it to be displayed on my ECS system rather than on radar. Obviously the Puget Sound and lower Vancouver Island areas would be "target rich" environments for AIS - lots of ferry and freighter traffic.

Is it of much help once you're past, say, Campbell River?

Or put another way, should I expect much in terms of quantity of targets? I suppose ferry boats and cruise ships - anything else? The commercial fishing fleet? What about coast guard ships?
