Ooops, failed to mention that the heater is a Webasto 2020 diesel furnace. The water circulation pump tends to suck the amps over time depending on the duty cycle, but it's DC etc. I was actually somewhat surprised of the pump's electrical draw - usually it is the most significant draw when running it over night.
We've got a couple of electric heaters that we never turn on, for exactly the reasons you state. They are holdovers from a previous owner that lived aboard, and should likely be pulled off the boat.
We're also doing some other projects to reduce the electrical demands (such as replacing the dead deck freezer with a new one, thus reducing or eliminating our dependence on ice production).
