I was an ABYC certified Technician. I sat was because I discovered to my
dismay that they revoke th ecertification unless you keep paying them money
to keep the certification in force.
This appears to be yet another source of income for them.
ABYC makes a big deal of how great it is for businesses to have "certified"
    technicians.
The courses themsleves are not cheap. Unless you live locally to where the
courxes are held, accomodations, travel and so on can easily double or even
exceed the total cost of the course. I had to pay several hundredd of
dollars just to write the exam. Then I discover five years later I am no
    longer certified.

I am not aware that Mercruiser trained mechanics ( as an example) lose their
    certificate after so many years.

    regards
    Arild
