Standards writing, undertaken by any trade organization, has the potential to
take you places you never thought of. I was involved, at arms length, writing
standards with our national trade association. We then "partnered" with ANSI
and went through their approval process and came up with comprehensive
standards which in turn was adopted by several states and many municipalities
as code. Sounds great and there was a lot of hard work writing, reading,
commenting and re-writing by industry professionals who gave unselfishly of
their time and talent. Then the Law of Unintended Consequences reared its
ugly head and a greedy shark of a lawyer took a pitiful plaintiff to the
promised land, bankrupting the trade association in the process. So much for
    good intentions.
