For small boat cabins, most space heaters are overkill. Ice fishermen in both
the Northeast and Scandinavia use large kerosene or propane fired lanterns to
heat their tiny ice huts and provide enough light for a session of poker and
drinking while waiting for fish to bite, Our Willard 30 has a 200 sq. ft.
cabin, about the same size as a Sing Sing jail cell. We use a modernistic Danish
kerosene lamp to provide internal comfort on chilly days. The lamp holds a
liter of deodorized lamp fuel (highly refined kerosene) and burn for about 8 hours
on a filling. It gives the light of a 40 watt bulb and emits about 2000
BTU/hr. This is equivalent to a 750 watt space heater. That's enough to keep the
cabin comfortable provided you wear a sweater.
The Danish lamp replaced a 100 year old Socony kerosene lamp. The lack of a
gimbal mount prevented us from lighting the Socony lamp when under way.
