i have 3 on my boat, they normally hold vacuum.
if water stays in the bowl, you know it's not the seal on the ball.
leaks are rare and you can usually hear them (shut down everythin on the
boat incl. AC, refrigeration, etc...).
odds are in something in the DBs or they were not seated properly when
installed/replaced. open them up, make sure they're clean and replace them.
I wonder if a little dish soap would help to prevent them from "catching"
when you screw the fitting back and deforming. Never tried that... but could
help
