According to the Sailrite forum, the Sailrite sewing machines are made by
Seiko. Machines with almost identical specifications are:
Sailrite Professional
Seiko LZ2-990
Reliable MSK-146B
Consew 146RB
Tacsew T146B
All are made either in Taiwan or China.
Sailrite tunes and tweaks its branded machines to handle heavy fabrics and
incorporates a solid state speed controller. The price listed on its website for
a straight stitch Sailrite LZ machine is $599. Zig zag machines, better
suited for sailmaking, are higher. The prices of the other machines are lower.
My wife has achieved success in sewing sails and awnings with a heavy duty
Brother machine from Sears. The sails were good enough to enable my son to win a
local Force 5 championship. The machine will handle 3 to 4 layers of dacron
sailcloth or 4 layers of Sunbrella with ease. The trick is to use the right
sized needle and adjust the tension so the crossover point is in the middle of
the fabric. At least that's what she tells me since my sewing skills are limited
to button replacement.
