This will be my short answers based on 7 year of experience after doing
exactly the same thing. When I first did the switch, I used 2 GC's for a
start bank for both of my SP135 Lehmans, and 6 GC's for a house bank. I've
since just left all 8 in parallel because no matter how bad I drain them all
down, I've never had them fail to start the engines.

Yes, it's a great idea. 2 GC's ALWAYS started my Lehmans just fine.

I first used cheap Exides, and got everything I expected for 6 1/2 years.
Switched recently to another brand, and am working through some problems.

Yes, and yes. Two GC's are cheaper than a 4D, and give more power.
