John:
A few years ago the thread on the seam of the Sunbrella fabric around the
sides of our flybridge were coming loose. I don't recall the amount the canvas
shops wanted to repair it but it was much more than I thought it should be. I
took it off the boat and tried to sew it using the wife's sewing machine. It
would not sew through the 3 layers of fabric. I located Sailrite on the
internet and after much thought, bought their Ultrafeed LSZ-1 Sewing Machine. I
had no problem resewing the seam line and this didn't require me to take any
classes. Later, I decided it was time to replace the upholstery on seating areas
in our boat. I found that as a senior citiizen, I could take an upholstery
class at our local community college - without charge (and many other courses
without charge as well). Naturally, I didn't want to "experiment" with my boat
cushions so I decided to tackle the kitchen dinette chairs and bar stools.
My wife was apprehensive about this, but they turned out very well. Due to
other priorities, I haven't had time to do the boat cushions yet, but I did do
some canvas work on another boat I purchased. Also made Phifertex shades for
the boat windows, awning/sun screen for our RV, etc.
I think it would be relatively simple to replace the windows in your Bimini.
It would simply mean using a sharp knife to go between the plastic and the
fabric to cut the thread so you could remove the plastic. Then, using that
window as a pattern, cut out the new window to the same size. Fit it back in
place and use some upholstery pins to hold it in place while you sew. Follow the
same lines as where it was previously sewed.
The LSZ-1 sewing machine is now $800 (was under $600 when I bought mine).
Mine has paid for itself many times over. Sailrite also has project videos that
would perhaps negate the need to go to a class (but check out community
college in your area for upholstery classes).
