Probably, when you are fishing while cruising, you will have to land the
fish single handedly rather than with the help of your fishing buddies. I would
recommend using lures equipped with a single hook, i.e. cedar plug, spoon or
a "feather jig" rather than something like a Rapala or other molded lure with
several treble hooks which will be flying around trying to hook you as you
attempt to land and unhook a thrashing fish by yourself. Be sure to wear the
fish out before attempting to bring him aboard, try to swing it right into an
ice chest and leave him in there till he expires or give him a few good raps
on the head with a club. Some folks pour alcohol over the fish's gills, it is
supposed to kill them right away, I have never tried that.
If you are trolling try pulling the lure closer, say 35-75 feet from the
transom, rather than far in back of the boat.
If you are cruising in the tropics learn about the dangers of Ciguatera.
Good luck, it is hard to beat fresh caught fish for dinner.
