Rob, you are correct. I should have qualified my post to say that I was
talking about plain vanilla 4 cycle diesel engines. The DD is a 2 cycle engine
and
needs the blower both to scavenge the residual exhaust and to fill the
cylinder with fresh air. Turbo 4 cycle engines will run (after a fashion)
without the
turbo, The turbo serves to pack more air into the cylinder than can get in
with normal atmospheric pressure, compensating for decreased volumetric
efficiency at high rpm and letting the engine burn cleaner at higher power.
