Sorry Jeff and John, you are right. I foolishly named designers and not
makes of boat. There are some Defever displacement hulls and some Krogen
planing hulls and yes, the smallest Nordhavn can exceed full displacement
    speeds with its hull.

I agree with Marin in his recent post:
    > A displacement hull is a hull that cannot be pushed
    > faster than its hull speed, even with a large application of power.

I think by definition, if you exceed hull speed, you are climbing your bow
wake. In my opinion that is planing or at least in the transition stage. If
you are not actually planing, it is just a function of power.

Just to complicate things, my LRC is not really full displacement. Jack
Hargrave saw what happens to displacement hulls with a strong beam wind
(they lay right over and stay there, as my Krogen 42 did) and decided to try
to minimize this tendency. He designed a hard chine and small flat surfaces
into the last 6 to 8 ft of the 58 to give it more stability underway. The
Fernandina Beach Coast Guard does not think it is very effective, since they
boarded me in emergency fashion without permission because I was listing so
badly they assumed I was sinking. Insisted on seeing the bilge. I simply had
a stiff beam breeze, which is why I was not offshore to begin with!

Jeez, what a can of worms! I want out!

    Bob
