    It's the same in all fields. When I was writing academic articles, I used to
    tell my students that what they read in the latest journals is information
    that is 6 to 18 months old. After the research is done or a situation is
    observed, it has to be written up, edited, peer reviewed if necessary,
    revised, set in
    type, page proofs approved, printed and distributed. Even in monthly
    magazines the information is three months out of date. It takes extraordinary
    effort
    to reduce the publication lag to as little as a week.

    Since every major storm reshapes coastlines, creates shoaling situations, or
    changes the preferred route in inlets, the best access to timely information
    is through web sites like ActiveCaptain. And that only if the site is
    constantly monitored and updated. Otherwise use your eyes and a good
    depthfinder. And
    don't let me get started on the accuracy of charts, either paper or
    electronic.
    Some are decades out of date.
