The refer gets its power from a battery bank through an inverter if not
hooked to shore power. The refer can get its power from the invertor or
from shore power if your inverter/charger is automatic or just from shore
power depending how it is wired. Normally the use of the inverter is based
on whether you are hooked up to shore power or gen set and not based on
    whether the engine is running.
I.e. the battery is your source of power for an inverter if not connected
to a gen set or shore power.
The battery bank gets charged when the engine runs, the genny runs or you
    are hooked up to shorepower.
