I've been watching this discussion and thinking. I installed a Jabsco VSD
about 3 1/2 years ago. No problem untill about 6 months ago (yes, right at
the end of warranty period) but not realizing it had a 3 year warranty I
didn't jerk it out like I should have (in hindsite I could have just got it
swaped out) . Well, I tore into it a couple of weeks ago and the only
problem was some calcium (I'm guessing), or at least just some white flaky
stuff, built up on the little flapper valves. Cleaned it off and put the
thing back together, and it works like new again. I'm pretty happy with this
performance.
I was going to pickup a rebuild kit, but the local dist hasn't started
stocking the kits. They sell tons of these pumps, but have never had a
request for a rebuild kit! (they can order me one for about $60) It looks to
me like it is a well built pump. The distributer did tell me that they had a
recall at one time on these pumps because of a computer chip problem, but I
have not personaly heard of anyone that actually experienced that problem.
While the Surflo may be considered a "really good pump" and $169 is
considered a good price, if you have to buy 3 of them over a 3 year period
($507!!) and / or have to tear into them once a year, I think I'll stay away
from them. The fact that the factory is handing out kits and new pumps
"based on your word", shows me that they have big problems and well know it.
