Fiberglass BottomkoteR with IrgarolR as the preferred bottom paint.
Do any
of you have comments (positive or negative) on this product? Perhaps
there's a better recommendation?
Since buying our boat ten years ago we have used Petit Ultima SR
exclusively. This is a sloughing or ablative paint. We have found
that one new coat with a second coat along the waterline, on the bow
and forefoot, and on the rudders is good for three years, although we
usually paint every two. But.... we use our boat year round winds
permitting, so the paint gets "eroded" at least once or twice a
month. I don't know if it would be as effective on a boat that only
gets used a few times a year or only during the summer season. But
we've had a great experience with the Ultima SR.
An ablative paint can be put on over a hard paint, butt it's usually
not recommended to put a hard paint over an ablative paint. So if
you have a hard bottom paint now, you should consider how you use
your boat before committing to an ablative paint because you may not
be able to change back except by stripping all the ablative paint off
the bottom first. Interlux does say their BottomKote hard paint
(they make an ablative version, too) can be put on "over any paint,"
so perhaps it can be put on over ablative paint with no problems.
The lower water temperatures and shorter days during the winter in
the PNW seem to make bottom growth a slower, smaller problem than in
places like southern California, Florida, etc.
