    Listees:

You'll remember the tale of my Surflo experience. Pedro Silva from Shurflo
advised me that he was shipping me a replacement pump for my first smoked one
and a repair kit for my now leaking one. Good. Great. So I asked him what was
the service life of the diaphragm. Here's his reply:

    Larry,

The diaph. life expectancy varies with each application and use. Here are
some numbers to give you an idea.

Pump operating under these conditions number of hours.
Open flow no restrictions. 3000 hours.
    30 psi restriction. 1500hours.

The recommended service, diaph. replacement is at 1200 hours or every year.

Let me know if you have questions

    Pedro Silva

Now, this is a lot different from how I looked at the situation in the
beginning. If they warrant the pump for 3 years, that must indicate that they
expect the diaphragm to last that long in normal service. Perhaps some of our
engineering types can figure out how many hours would be accumulated for a
fulltime liveaboard couple in one year. Not sure what a diaphragm kit costs
but throwing in a diaphragm every year or so is a cheap price to pay for a
    really good pump.

    Regards,
