Thanks Dave & Nancy, and everyone else for your replies,

We have completely reconfigured the engine room (used to house a Kahlenberg
engine 6' high and 10'long, and two huge gen sets. We replaced the gen sets
and the previous owner had replaced the Kahlenberg with the Cat 3306. So we
reclaimed a third of the engine room and made a master cabin out of the
space. Now the engine room is smaller and while most would drool at the
size, it's smaller to me, and we needed to gain space, so removing the two
huge air tanks provided room for an a/c chiller, diesel furnace and various
circulation pumps and whatnot, with space left over for the starter bank.

The dealer also mentioned the air start for this engine had been
discontinued, and parts and maint would be tougher to get around the world,
while anyone would be able to service the electric start for years down the
    road.

He did start the engine...one of the maint items on the engine was to
introduce vaporizine lube oil into the engine because it will sit dormant
for a long time while the boat renovation continues. The oil gives off fumes
that coat the interior of the cylinders and crankcase. So he brought his
own batteries, started the engine and ran it for 15 minutes a few times once
the starter was installed. This was a Cat dealer, so he was thorough (and
    charged for it!)

Your suggestions sound good, and I'll look into the Group 31 batteries. My
8 house batteries (Trojan 6v batteries) have an amphour capacity of about
1400 Ah, and I have a Trace Sine-wave inverter, as you suggest. My
alternater is a Leese-NeVille 250amp with isolated ground. Trying to keep
all the electronics ground isolated, and bond them to one grounding bar on
    the boat.

That's it in a nutshell, thanks again,

    Mark Andrew
