"...So, while you may not have to limit the charge rate on a dead AGM, won't
the battery resistance increase quickly and limit the current inflow just like
    any other battery?.."

An AGM battery has very low internal resistance: hence it's low heating
losses and higher natural bulk charge rate. As with any other batteries, the
maximum bulk charge is limited by either the charger output or regulator OR
what the battery will accept...Unless a battery is flat dead, or defective,
artificial limiting of charge isn't normally necessary...that's the job of the
    regulator.

"...Also, if you push the AGM to the full.....charging rate, is that really
the optimum charge condition for long battery life?.."

According to AGM manufacturers, yes.....high charge rates are just as natural
for AGM's as much lower ones are for traditional wet cells. So like a big
battery will take more charge than a small, an AGM is ok with higher charge
currents...Likely do to different materials which is reflected in lower
internal resistance. Manufacturer specs show battery life related primarily to
life cycle discharge amp hours not charge rate.

Listen, we don't win often...let's take this one as a pleasant surprise from
Mother Nature!!!! Not as cool as an ion propulsion engine, but it'll have to
    do!!!
