I currently have 3 Harwich ship's clocks in my home. I have had these
particular ones from 4-10 years and have never had a problem. As an
aside, I like them in my house because it reminds me of being at sea
and listening for the chime to tell the time at night beats having a
    bright read-out on a clock.

I like giving ships clocks for gifts as the recipient always remembers
which gift is from me and you can usually find a clock to fit the
budgetary size of the gift. Last week I bought a Chelsea Shipstrike
wind-up as a wedding gift - I have had them in the past and have not
had a problem as long as they are wound precisely on schedule and are
    not overwound.

I'm not sure if this hint has any merit, but when changing the time on
any of the clocks, I rotate the hand until just before the chime and
then I let the chime cycle through before continuing to advance the
hand further. I was told this decades ago by an experienced sailor and
    have followed his advice since.
