We suffered this catastrophy years ago
on our 44CSY while docked overnite in the COINJOCK canel in NC
First the cause:
Tied at the dock...accidently turned off the bilge pump upon retiring for the night
Tide was running
Took on enough water to sink 4 feet , hanging off the 6 dock lines
woke up at 3 am water was over engine and up to the aft bunk.
Called coast guard on the radio (station is accross canal) but
they were asleep-did not answer so a boat next to us called 911
on the pay phone and they some how woke them up.
They came over the bridge in a pick up with a large pump.
By then we had turned on the bilge pump and I dove under the oil slick
and hand felt each thru hull but found no leak !!
BOTTOM LINE was that the bilge pump had back siphoned past the anti siphon break
which had a mud wasp nest in the break and filled the boat.
We were coming back from the Bahamas and had a list to port which barely put the original bilge discharge at the waterline.
The current in the canel pressurized the thru hole.
(saw this happen to another boat in a tidal river while at the dock (Cohansey River)
The water covered the whole boat up to the galley stove and the bunks.
The engine was emptied of lubricant- the borg warner was partially filled thru vent.
THE FIXES
The mechanic accross the Canel was excellant.
After the pumpout We towed the boat across and drained the engine and trans
He displaced the rest with diesel and pumped out (to a barrel)
We did that many times (5/6 I think) all the time hand cranking the engine.
The batteries stayed dry because they are mounted very high (as are my current AGM's)
I spent a week cleaning oil and scum off the entire 44 feet inside the hull.
The first modification was to seal the bilge discharge and move it up to 12" above water line.
The stain became a reminder of what the discharge was there for.
We boxed in the vacuum breaker to keep out critters.
4 YEARS LATER the engine (Perkins 4-154) was still running strong with 1500 more hours.
The key was to get the (Brackish) water displaced with clean lubricant in this case diesel.
If it had been 100% salt water I think the mechanic would have started with a water flush but maybe not.
Siphoning can be an insidious prolem and poor sea water hose can sink a boat in minutes.
Inaccessable hoses and thru hole valves exist on 42' CHB's especially the forward head seawater valve and
should be moved or removed if you cannot inspect them or close them in seconds or minutes.
Hope this story helps anyone who reads it.
