".. We have a 5kw Northern lights that we use mostly for heating water and
cooking on the electric stove. The admiral would like to convert to propane
for the stove..."
I've advocated propane for cooking and heat aboard for nearly genny free
cruising for 30 years. (longer, but I won't admit that!) Nothing like early
morning coffee...quiet!!! ditto for dinner!
But once a genny is installed I personally see limited merit in going to the
time, trouble and expense of removing it. They are potentially valuable at
resale time as many like the flexibility they offer. But that can be a very
personal decision based on your use of your boat.
Why not add propane cooking, even some propane heat if you wish (RV campers
have different types) and then try a "genny free" year or two...see how it
goes.
I've had a Surburban brand (RV) propane hot air heater on my last two boats
for taking the chill off in mild weather...a 34,000 BTU unit (uses about 6
amps when running) does just fine above thirty degrees or so outside weather
temperatures aboard my 48 ft Hatteras. I also have a catalytic "CAT" brand
heater in my bridge deck for early and late season comfort...6,000 BTU...draws
only 1 amp..glows red, reminiscent of a fireplace.
If you do want to get rid of the existing genny, an alternative is to consider
a small Honda type 1 or 2 KW portable generator..."just in case".. or for
occassional battery charging....
I sure like having some sort of charging capability aboard....because if I
don't some crapola WILL occur!!!
