Two members on the listed called me out for using outlandish scope. One
regarding the PNW and the other St. Augustine. Allow me to respond although I
think ya'll know better:
A) I may be crazy, but I am not stupid, well maybe not as stupid as I look or
act.
B) I don't cruise the Pacific Northwest so I don't need 2000' of chain. I
would use less scope if I did and perhaps cable and not too much chain.
C) I don't use 100' of chain in St. Augustine either, because it is a small
anchorage and I do respect others. Although I do allow for high tide, not the
low tide of 7'.
D) In fact I may have exaggerated a bit, which I thought was self-evident, my
bad.
E) I do set a lot of scope when the wind is scheduled to pipe up and/or we
have enough space.
My entry email was to point out we all need to take responsibility for
ourselves when anchoring by ensuring we learn, practice and use proper
technique. Part of that is knowing when and how to use more or less scope for
a given location and anchoring system. Further, this list and its knowledge
base is a good place to get started on the learning.
