Excellent set of posts....reliable comments. I agree with just about all of
them. And the Boat Keeper article was also good with one exception: dirty
filters CAN hurt Detroit injectors. Keep in mind that while brand spanking new
clean filters of various sizes have about the same flow rate, dirty, clogged
filters DO NOT. So it IS important to monitor filters via vacuum gauges if you
really want to preserve fuel flow.

Also,as I have posted previously, Detroit Diesel injectors require a LOT of
fuel, enough to not just to feed each cylinder for power, but extra fuel to
cool and lubricate injectors, then be returned to the fuel tank. In other
words, you CAN damage Detroit diesel two cycle (53 series, 71 series, 92
series engines) injectors with insufficient fuel flow....and there are no
symptoms...the engine reaches normal power and RPM while you may prematurely
wear your injectors. (Most other diesels use a high pressure fuel pump to
activate injectors; Detroit injectors act as their own little pump.)

I have used 2 micron primaries for over 30 years, on series 53 and now 71
series two cycle Detroits, without any apparent ill effects, but as soon as I
heard about injector failures, I added vacuum gauges and water alarms. When I
use up my spares, I plan to switch to 10 micron primaries just to give myself
    a little more leeway.
