    John:

Eight knots is close to the hull speed of a 39' loa trawler, so assuming
that it weighs about 30,000 lbs then it will take 60 hp to reach hull speed.
Ten knots is 25% faster and may take 50% more fuel. Lets call it 90 hp.

Older diesels consume about .06 gallons per horsepower per hour. So you will
burn about 3.6 gph at 8 kts and 5.4 gph at 10 kts. Large big iron twins like
the 3208s will probably burn a bit more at low rpms and the twin engine
factor, so call it 4 gph and 6 gph. or 2 NM/gal and 1.7 gph.

    David
